ok. here are my thoughts. you have the extremists that will breastfeed until the child is in college. and you have the anti's that think its disgusting and think breastfeeding should be banned from the public eye. (i know one of each). my opinion is that if it works for you then go for it. its free, its healthy, its there when you need it. if you have struggles in the latch on department like i did with addy, then give it your best try and move on. there is nothing wrong with formula (besides its expensive and stinky). i do however think it is important to make sure the baby gets the collastrum (sp?) with all your antibodies and what not.
i agree, BUT sometimes it just doesn't work out. and that is OK. my milk never came in with brody, and with bently i was excited for it to work. BUT my body couldn't keep up and had to turn to formula. YOU to what is best for you. I cried so much about brody but now i wished i wouldn't of felt so bad, because brody is healthy and smart and happy. it is really your choice no matter what anyone says. If you ask gma allen you know what she would say :) She still tells me that blake need to shave off his gotee (sp?) I love her.
I loved nursing because it's free! I never used formula with Steven because he would never take a bottle. Also, as far as how long to nurse goes I think that depends a lot on you, the baby and how you feel about it. Also, remember no matter what your plan may be, the baby may have other ideas. I planned to nurse Steven until he was a year old, but when he turned 8 months (almost to the day) he decided to stop nursing. He quit cold turkey! So I started giving him formula in a sippy cup (he still wouldn't touch a bottle) and eased him onto milk. I say do whatever works for you and you little one.
I did both ever since he was born. It gave me a break so Dad could bond with him and then when it was time to transition him to the bottle only it was not that hard. I breast-fed for 9 months!
I LOVE breastfeeding (after the horrible first couple of weeks, anyway) and am SO THANKFUL that I was able to nurse all my girls. I think if you can, you should do it. But don't feel guilty if you can't or don't want to.
oooh, here comes the heated debate of old.
